Attendance Policy

Elementary & Middle School

Absences

Parents are encouraged to report a students absence using the school’s attendance line.  Honored excused absences are medical and bereavement with proper documentation. Excessive absences and/or tardies will be referred to the administration for follow-up. Please notify your child’s teacher if your child has a contagious disease or an extended illness.

K-8 grade students arriving after 9:05 a.m. will be marked as absent for the day.

9-12 grade students arriving after 8:05 a.m. will be marked as absent for the day.

Three tardies will equal one absence. Ten absences will result in a referral to the school social worker and/or the Oakland County Truant Department.

Attendance

All students are expected to attend school daily. Truancy is identified as when a student 12 years of age and older has missed 10 days of school.  Educational neglect is identified as when a student 12 years of age and younger has missed 10 days of school. Currently, the state statute regarding truancy states the following: Compulsory School Attendance Law MCL 380.1561

  • Parents, guardians or others in charge of a child between 6-16 years of age must send the child to school.
  • The child’s attendance must be continuous and consecutive for the entire school year.
  • The Truant Officer gets involved when a child is repeatedly absent or tardy and the school’s efforts to improve the child’s attendance fail.

Tardy Policy

K-5 grade students arriving after 9:05 a.m. must report to the office for a tardy slip.

Three tardies will equal one absence.  Ten or more absences will result in a referral to the Student Advocate Office and/or Oakland County Truancy Department.

Vacations

We encourage parents to review the school calendar and schedule all vacations during the time that school is not in session. We have scheduled a number of days when school will be closed due to parent-teacher conferences, professional development for teachers, winter holiday break, mid-winter break and spring break.  In the event that you must schedule a vacation while school is in session, please notify the student’s teachers of your intended vacation time and arrange for a class-work packet. Parents that pull students out for vacations that do not coincide with the school’s calendar, may pick up homework assignments the week after the vacation period.

High School

Arrival

Students should arrive at school between 7:20 am and 7:45 am. On-time arrival into the classroom is essential because classes begin promptly at 8:00 am. Classroom entry doors lock at 8:05 am and all students arriving tardy to school will be directed to the main office for a tardy pass before being allowed to enter class. After the student accumulates three tardy arrivals, further disciplinary actions will be taken.
