Makayla Griffin, Bradford Academy’s 2020 Senior Class President and Valedictorian, is heading to Michigan State University on a full-ride scholarship! She’s been attending Bradford since 3rd grade and is grateful for the leadership experiences and the AP courses she’s been offered at Bradford.

During her senior capstone project, she started researching various careers to try to figure out what she wanted to study in college. Originally, she was interested in becoming a veterinarian or a paleontologist but decided against those for various reasons. She reflected on what she cared about, and this brought her to the study of plants. Makayla plans to earn a degree in plant biology so she can become a botanical technician, which will allow her to help others research various ecosystems.

“I’m really excited to attend Michigan State! I was already invited to join the STEM Progam, so I have weekly Zoom calls with other STEM majors, which is nice because I’ve already met some other students (virtually). In this program, I’m also able to take a summer math course for free, which is great because that gives me more college credits that I’ll be able to start my freshman year with,” explained Makayla. “I also signed up to be a Spartan Success Scholar, which provides me with two mentors. I’ll be assigned a peer and professional coach who will help me navigate my college experience.”

As Bradford’s Senior Class President, she spent a lot of time fundraising for class activities – some of which weren’t able to happen due to the building closing early because of COVID-19. She facilitated students paying to participate in things like dress down days, movie day and even fun Sweetest Day activities. Makayla is also a core member of the National Honor Society at Bradford.

Makayla shared that she’s met a lot of awesome teachers and students at Bradford over the years and that she’s grateful for her experiences there.

Good luck on your new adventures at Michigan State University, Makayla!
