Attendance Policy

Elementary School

Absences

Students are required to provide a written excuse from their parents/legal guardians when absent. Excessive absences and/or tardies will be referred to the administration for follow-up. Please notify your child’s teacher if your child has a contagious disease or an extended illness.

K-8 grade students arriving after 9:05 a.m. will be marked as absent for the day.

9-12 grade students arriving after 8:05 a.m. will be marked as absent for the day.

Three tardies will equal one absence. Ten absences will result in a referral to the school social worker and/or the Oakland County Truant Department.

Attendance

All students are expected to attend school daily. Truancy is identified as when a student 12 years of age and older has missed 10 days of school.  Educational neglect is identified as when a student 12 years of age and younger has missed 10 days of school. Currently, the state statute regarding truancy states the following: Compulsory School Attendance Law MCL 380.1561

  • Parents, guardians or others in charge of a child between 6-16 years of age must send the child to school.
  • The child’s attendance must be continuous and consecutive for the entire school year.
  • The Truant Officer gets involved when a child is repeatedly absent or tardy and the school’s efforts to improve the child’s attendance fail.

Vacations

We encourage parents to review the school calendar and schedule all vacations during the time that school is not in session. We have scheduled a number of days when school will be closed due to parent-teacher conferences, professional development for teachers, winter holiday break, mid-winter break and spring break.  In the event that you must schedule a vacation while school is in session, please notify the student’s teachers of your intended vacation time and arrange for a class-work packet. Parents that pull students out for vacations that do not coincide with the school’s calendar, may pick up homework assignments the week after the vacation period.

Middle School

Absences

Students are required to provide a written excuse from their parents/legal guardians when absent. Excessive absences and/or tardies will be referred to the administration for follow-up. Please notify your child’s teacher if your child has a contagious disease or an extended illness.

Policy on Tardy or Late Student Arrival

Students who report to their classroom between 7:46 am and 8:00 am will be considered tardy.  Students who report to school at 8:01 am or after, without prior approval or a doctor’s note, will be considered absent for the first hour of school. Students with excessive unexcused tardies (ten or more) will be referred to the principal.

Attendance

All students are expected to attend school on a daily basis. Students who are absent often are considered truant. Bradford Academy resides in Oakland County and truancy in Oakland County is identified as when a student 12 years of age and older has missed 10 days of school. Truancy issues will be reported to the county in which the family reside.

Educational neglect is identified as when a student 12 years of age and younger has missed 10 days of school. Currently, the state statute regarding truancy states the following:

Compulsory School Attendance Law MCL 380.1561

  • Parents, guardians or others in charge of a child between 6-16 years of age must send the child to school.
  • The child’s attendance must be continuous and consecutive for the entire school year.
  • The Truant Officer gets involved when a child is repeatedly absent or tardy and the school’s efforts to improve the child’s attendance is not successful.

Vacations

We encourage parents to review the school calendar and schedule all vacations during the time that school is not in session. We have scheduled a number of days when school will be closed due to Parent Teacher Conferences, Professional Development for Teachers, Winter Holiday Break, Mid Winter Break, and Spring Break.

In the event that you must schedule a vacation while school is in session, please notify the student’s teachers of your intended vacation time and arrange for a class work packet. Teacher will need a three (3) day notice to have a class work packet available for pick-up in the main office.

High School

Arrival

Students should arrive at school between 7:00 am and 7:20 am. On-time arrival into the classroom is essential because classes begin promptly at 7:45 a.m. Classroom entry doors lock at 7:45am and all students arriving tardy to school will be directed through the main office to a holding area until the end of 1st hour. After the student accumulates three tardy arrivals, further disciplinary actions will be taken.

Absences

A letter from the vice principal will be sent to the student’s parent/guardian on the fifth absence.  A mandatory conference will be held between administration and the student’s parent/guardian upon the fifth absence. If the parent/guardian does not attend the conference the student will be placed in In-School suspension until the conference is held.  After 10 absences, a second parent meeting will be set up to create an action plan to improve attendance.

After 10 absences, the second parent meeting, and implementation of an action plan, if attendance does not improve, the case will be referred to the truancy office in their county of residence. Students will receive an Incomplete “I” grade and no credit in the course due to lack of formal instruction and/or they may be permanently removed from the Academy due to lack of attendance. The Circuit Court Juvenile Division will be notified that the student has been removed from the Academy.

Note: Three late arrivals (more than 10 minutes) = One (1) absence
Three early dismissals (more than 10 minutes) = One (1) absence

Attendance

Parents are asked to call the Academy before 7:30 am when their child is going to be absent. This does not constitute an excused absence.  Whenever students are absent from the Academy, notes or medical excuses are required explaining the absence. The note should also have day, time and phone number where the parent can be reached.  Students absent for more than half of the school day on the day of a scheduled after-school or evening sponsored activity/event will NOT be allowed to participate in that activity/event.

Vacations

We would like to encourage you to schedule family vacations at times other than when the Academy is in session. When you must schedule a family trip during Academy time, contact the educator in advance concerning how your child will complete missed assignments.

Time given for the completion of make-up work will be one (1) day for every day absent.
