]]>The post Taking a “Brain Break” This Winter Break with Bradford Academy appeared first on Bradford Academy.
]]>Winter Break is finally upon us at Bradford Academy! As our students head home for the holidays, we couldn’t be more excited to see family and friends, relax and prepare for the last half of what has been an amazing school year thus far. While this is a time for relaxation and restoration, we know how difficult it can be for students to stay engaged with their schoolwork over break. We have compiled a few ideas and activities below that will keep your students’ brains active over break.
The first activity that will keep your student thinking this Winter is to spend time reading! A trip to the local library is perfect for a snowy day and allows your student to learn more about what they learn in class. Finding 20 minutes a day to read makes all the difference in the classroom and keeps students prepared for the first day back!
Whether you have a personal computer at home, can visit the local library or can play on a phone, there are a slew of internet games designed to teach students on subjects from foreign languages to geometry! Here are just a few of our favorite resources: Lumosity, ABCMouse, Duolingo, and Cool Math Games.
According to the National Institute of Health, physical activity is linked to improved cognitive and brain function. For our school community, that means activities like building a snowman, sledding, making a snow fort or even simply going for a walk can be refreshing and great for the brain!
The last tool we have to give students a break from their normal learning is to visit a local Museum or Exhibit. This is such a great way to learn in a more interactive and visual way. They can make connections to things they are learning in the classroom, or even better, something new!
We know that our break from school is a time to relax for students, staff and parents alike. We hope that with the tools listed above our students can come back to Bradford Academy both excited and prepared to learn more. There is plenty going on at our school this Winter, so be sure to keep up with us over break on social media and our blog.

]]>October is Principal Appreciation Month and at Bradford Academy we couldn’t be more excited to highlight our hardworking and dedicated administration for all that they do. We take pride in providing both a unique and wholesome education, and that starts with our leadership. We want to take this opportunity to celebrate our leadership and explain what makes them such an important piece of our community.
This first administrator we would like to celebrate is our K-8 Principal Jason Veitch. Jason started in this role in February 2020 and previously taught 7th-grade science at Bradford Academy. He holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Western Michigan University. Previous to his time at Bradford, Mr. Veitch taught grades 5-8 for 13.5 years.
The next person we want to highlight is our high school principal, Dr. Phillip Price. Dr. Price is committed to student growth and development. Mr. Price inspires Bradford High School students and an energetic and enthusiastic staff. His years of a dedicated, results-oriented mindset helps establish and achieve goals for ongoing academic success.
The last administrator that we would like to showcase is our K-8 Assistant Principal, Te’Niece Dixon. Te’Niece was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, and later moved to Detroit to pursue a career in Special Education at Wayne State University. She furthered her education at Grand Valley State University and developed her administrative skills and her passion for providing access to quality educational opportunities to underrepresented populations of children. Te’Niece has made such an impact at Bradford Academy and she does it all with compassion, patience, and respect.
Our leaders will always be a fundamental part of our school community, and we can’t thank them enough for their compassion, dedication and hard work. They serve as the backbone of our school, the ones inspiring change, and the mentors who shape our youth’s future. While this month may mark the official celebration, every day is an opportunity to recognize and support these outstanding individuals. ]]>The post Making Adjustments for the new School Year at Bradford Academy appeared first on Bradford Academy.
]]>The 23-24 school year is upon us at Bradford Academy, and we know that with that comes a plethora of common anxieties, concerns and excitements. For students and their families, the end of the summer can be a busy and overwhelming time. We have compiled a list of common pitfalls that arise with the start of the new year and ways to overcome them!
Academic Pressure
The new school year often comes with new challenges, whether those be new subjects, teachers or expectations at Bradford Academy. These transitions can be difficult for students and families, but there are helpful ways to establish both the student and family in their new school routine.
One great way to stay on top of making adjustments with the new year is to stay in communication with teachers as needed. Whether it be attending parent-teacher conferences, visiting orientation or using communications platforms like email, staying in touch with your student’s teachers is a great way to make sure that any pain points that come up with the new year are taken care of quickly and efficiently.
Homework Struggles
A common conflict with students and their families at the start of a new year is homework that is either unfamiliar or challenging. Procrastination and disorganization are two examples of how homework issues arise at home.
One solution for issues like procrastination and disorganization would be teaching time-management skills that makes homework less daunting once your student is at home. This could be anything from rewards for completing things on time, setting aside an hour for study at home every day or breaking tasks into smaller steps. Fostering a positive routine for homework can help your student stay ahead of the curve throughout the whole year!
Social Transitions
Another recurring theme among parents and students is anxiety around making new friends, joining new groups with extracurriculars such as sport, or even adapting to a new environment in the classroom.
A fantastic way to encourage a student that might be struggling socially is to ask your student why they may be nervous about returning to the classroom. Having discussion around these fears can help them address the underlying anxiety around joining a new club, finding a new hobby or making new friends.
Back to school season doesn’t have to be stressful for your student. By creating a routine and listening to their concerns, we hope they will look forward to another fun and exciting school year at Bradford Academy. Be sure to stay up to date with our back-to-school happenings on our social media and website, and as always, our hardworking support staff is always a call away to give any student the individual time and support they need.

]]>The post Forming Good Summer Habits at Bradford Academy appeared first on Bradford Academy.
]]>Maintaining good habits over summer break can help students stay productive, engaged and prepared for when classes resume. We’ve put together a brief list of good habits to create this summer to ensure that your student is as ready as possible when Bradford Academy opens this fall.
1.) Dedicate time to learning something new
We challenge our students to dedicate at least an hour a day to learning a new skill or pursuing a hobby that your child is passionate about. Whether this be playing a musical instrument to learning a new language or trying your hand at coding. Spending time to learn about something that keeps your student engaged is a great way to keep their brains working over the Summer Break.
2.) Review last year’s school work
If your child held on to any old work from last year’s classes, a perfect way to keep them engaged with their school work is to go back over their work with them again. This is an effective way to refresh on previous information and help build on the material they will be learning in the coming months!
3.) Limit screen time
While technology can certainly be useful, it has become very important to balance it with other activities. Ensure that free time is well-rounded by limiting time on-screen and encouraging them to visit friends, walk outside and make use of their newly-found summer energy!
4.) Track your child’s sleep schedule
It can take a while to catch up, but to truly prepare for the upcoming school year, getting up on time is very important. Getting into a new routine can take weeks, and staying on top of your early riser makes sure that when that first week of class approaches, your child will be on-time and better prepared.
5.) Be sure to have fun!
At the end of the day, summer break is a time for relaxation and socializing.
An important piece of a successful school year is time away to reflect on our achievements, and with as many achievements as we’ve had, it would be a shame not to celebrate. To everyone in our school community, enjoy your summer and stay in touch with us via social media or our website. We will continue to post the great happenings in our community this summer, and we hope that with a few of the tips mentioned above, this summer is as calming and productive as our school.
